Bodum, Hario, Chemex and Bialetti offer four distinct routes to manual coffee: cafetière immersion, controlled pour-over, paper-filtered flask brewing and concentrated stovetop coffee. Choose by the drink you enjoy and the attention you want to give it, rather than treating these brewers as interchangeable alternatives to an espresso machine.

In short

  • Bodum: start with a Chambord cafetière if you want straightforward steep-and-press brewing without paper filters.
  • Hario: consider a V60 for hands-on pour-over control, or a Switch for a combination of steeping and paper filtration.
  • Chemex: choose the hourglass brewer if you want paper-filtered coffee in a vessel that also serves it.
  • Bialetti: choose a moka pot for concentrated stovetop coffee, but check the exact model’s hob compatibility.
  • Before buying: check capacity in millilitres, matching filters or replacement parts, cleaning instructions and the seller’s support arrangements.

The four companies at a glance

These profiles concentrate on each brand’s signature manual brewers, not every appliance carrying its name. For the wider equipment market, the coffee machine brands hub is the starting point.

The fact panel below separates company identity from manufacturing origin. A brand’s home country does not establish where every component or model is made.

Brand and company Parent group or ownership Country connection Main brewing classes relevant here UK availability and support route
Bodum, BODUM Group Family-owned BODUM Group Founded in Denmark; head office moved to Switzerland Cafetières; other manual coffee equipment UK website, published instructions and a dedicated spare-parts catalogue
Hario, HARIO Co., Ltd. HARIO group; the cited company profile identifies HARIO Co., Ltd., rather than an external parent Japan Pour-over drippers, immersion drippers, siphons and cold-brew equipment Hario UK lists brewers, filters and spare parts, with a contact page
Chemex, CHEMEX Corporation Family-owned CHEMEX Corporation United States Manual flask brewers and paper filters Manufacturer lists Ozone Coffee Roasters UK as its UK distributor; approach your seller for purchase support
Bialetti, Bialetti Industrie S.p.A. Controlled through Octagon BidCo, part of NUO Italy Stovetop moka pots UK retail listings include Moka Express and Venus models; use the seller and manufacturer’s contact route

Ownership, product listings and support routes were checked in November 2026. They establish available channels, not independently measured service quality or guaranteed stock.

Bodum: straightforward cafetière brewing

Bodum began in Copenhagen in 1944 and remains family-owned. Its best-known manual brewer is the Chambord, a cafetière, also called a French press: coffee steeps directly in hot water before a mesh plunger separates most of the grounds from the drink.

Bodum’s published Chambord specification lists borosilicate glass, stainless steel and plastic. Borosilicate is heat-resistant glass, not unbreakable glass; the manufacturer explicitly identifies the cited model as not shatterproof.

The attraction is the uncomplicated workflow. You do not need to maintain a careful pouring pattern while the coffee brews. Bodum’s instructions specify coarse grounds, a four-minute steep and a slowly lowered plunger.

Advantages, limitations and best fit

Advantages: no disposable paper filter is required, and the glass vessel lets you see what is happening. Bodum’s UK catalogue lists replacement beakers and filter components, making part identification worth checking before replacing a whole brewer.

Limitations: the mesh approach is not the choice to make if your priority is a cup without fine particles. The glass beaker also needs careful handling, particularly around taps, sinks and other crockery.

Who it suits: our recommendation is Bodum for someone who values a simple routine and prefers substantial texture to the especially clean finish associated with paper filtration. It is less appealing if disposing of wet grounds is the part of coffee preparation you most dislike.

Check the material of the exact version you order. Bodum’s replacement catalogue includes both glass and plastic beakers, so the brand name alone does not identify the vessel material.

Hario: control over pouring, steeping and materials

Hario is a Japanese company whose glassmaking history began in 1921. Its signature V60 dripper arrived in 2005, using a cone, spiral ribs and a single large outlet.

In pour-over brewing, water passes through a bed of ground coffee and a paper filter into a cup or server below. Hario explains that the V60’s design gives the brewer considerable control through pouring, which is its attraction and its learning requirement.

The V60 comes in plastic, ceramic, heatproof glass and metal versions. These are material options within a brewing system, not a reliable ranking from ordinary to excellent coffee.

V60 or Switch?

Choose a conventional V60 if you want to practise pouring and adjust how water moves through the grounds. A narrow-spouted kettle is useful for controlling the amount and rate of water, although the dripper does not require a particular branded kettle.

The Switch adds a valve beneath the dripper. Close it to hold water and coffee together for immersion, meaning steeping; open it to drain through the paper. Hario UK lists the glass size 02 Switch with a claimed capacity of 200 ml, a useful reminder to check usable capacity rather than assume every dripper makes a large mug.

Advantages: a broad choice of materials, sizes and accessories, plus the option of conventional pour-over or valve-controlled steeping.

Limitations: filter size must match the dripper, and the conventional V60 asks you to take an active role in brewing. Glass and ceramic versions still require careful handling.

Who it suits: our recommendation is the V60 for a curious learner who enjoys changing one brewing variable at a time. Choose the Switch if controlling steeping time appeals more than relying entirely on a pouring sequence.

Chemex: the flask and filter work together

The Chemex coffeemaker was designed and patented by Peter Schlumbohm in 1941. CHEMEX Corporation remains family-owned, and its signature brewer combines an upper brewing cone and lower serving vessel in one hourglass-shaped piece of borosilicate glass.

The Classic Series uses a wooden collar and rawhide tie. The Glass Handle Series provides a different grip without changing the basic brewing function. Choose between them for handling and appearance, not an assumed improvement in extraction.

Chemex’s bonded paper filters are central to the intended result. The manufacturer describes them as removing sediment and oils; our recommendation is therefore Chemex for readers who prioritise a clean-textured drink rather than the heavier texture of mesh-filtered coffee.

What ownership involves

Advantages: brewing and serving happen in the same vessel, and the manual flask has no moving brewing mechanism. The glass-handle option also avoids the Classic model’s rawhide tie.

Limitations: you need correctly fitting papers and space to handle a glass flask safely. The manufacturer specifies different half-moon papers for the three-cup brewer, so not every Chemex filter fits every Chemex.

Filter placement matters mechanically. The spout acts as an air channel, allowing displaced air to escape while coffee enters the flask. Chemex instructs users to place the three-layer side of its folded paper over the spout to help prevent collapse into that channel.

Who it suits: our recommendation is Chemex for someone who wants to brew and serve paper-filtered coffee at the table. It is less suitable for a crowded shared kitchen where the flask will regularly meet other equipment.

Bialetti: concentrated coffee from the hob

Bialetti is the Italian company associated with the Moka Express, introduced in 1933. Its ownership changed in June 2025, when Octagon BidCo, a NUO group vehicle, acquired control.

The Moka Express has an aluminium body. Heating water in its lower chamber drives it through the coffee basket into the upper collector. It produces concentrated stovetop coffee, but it should not be bought on the assumption that it reproduces pump-driven espresso.

The Venus offers a stainless-steel alternative. Bialetti’s published specification describes induction compatibility but explicitly excludes the two-cup Venus. The aluminium Moka Express is not directly induction-compatible; check any proposed adapter against the relevant manufacturer instructions.

Advantages, limitations and best fit

Advantages: a compact stovetop format, no disposable paper requirement and a drink style distinct from a long filter coffee.

Limitations: hob compatibility, heat control and the condition of the seal and safety valve all matter. It also needs to cool before opening, which interrupts immediate back-to-back preparation.

Follow the model’s instructions rather than borrowing espresso technique. Bialetti directs users not to compress the coffee in the funnel, not to overfill the water chamber and to keep the safety valve clean. Never try to compensate for poor flow by tamping harder or increasing the heat aggressively.

Who it suits: our recommendation is Bialetti for someone who enjoys concentrated coffee and is happy to supervise a hob. It is not our choice for unattended preparation at an office tea point.

How to choose between Bodum, Hario, Chemex and Bialetti

Our comparison criteria are brewing involvement, filtration, serving format and compatibility checks. These are suitability judgements based on published designs and instructions, not results from comparative testing.

Brewer Main advantage Main compromise Our suggested user
Bodum Chambord Steep-and-press workflow without paper Wet-ground cleanup and possible fine sediment Someone seeking a straightforward routine
Hario V60 or Switch Pouring control, or valve-controlled immersion Matching papers and an involved workflow Someone who enjoys learning and experimenting
Chemex Paper filtration and an integrated serving flask Specific papers and careful glass handling Someone brewing coffee to serve at the table
Bialetti Moka Express or Venus Concentrated stovetop brewing Hob checks, hot components and cooling time Someone who prefers a short, intense drink

Check capacity, consumables and replacement parts

Do not compare the word “cup” across brands as though it were a standard mug. Bodum and Chemex publish different cup conventions, while Bialetti provides model-specific capacities. Ask for millilitres and distinguish vessel capacity from the drink actually delivered.

Before ordering, identify the matching paper, beaker, mesh assembly or gasket. A replacement part being listed somewhere does not guarantee compatibility with your particular model or availability from your chosen UK supplier.

If this is a workplace purchase, ask the seller to confirm suitability for the intended use in writing. For a shared routine where nobody wants to manage individual pours, automatic filter brands are a more relevant next comparison.

Separate care instructions from consumer rights

Follow the exact model’s cleaning instructions. Chemex permits dishwasher cleaning of its glass coffeemakers after removing the collar and rawhide; the aluminium Moka Express requires different care and should not go in the dishwasher.

For a UK consumer purchase, statutory rights concerning faulty goods are separate from a manufacturer’s warranty. Business purchases need their own contractual checks, rather than an assumption that consumer protections apply. The warranties and support guide explains the distinction.

FAQ

Can I use one grind setting for all four brands?

You should not assume one setting suits all four. Bodum specifies coarse grounds for the Chambord, Chemex recommends medium-coarse grounds, and Bialetti requires coffee ground appropriately for moka brewing without compressing it. If buying pre-ground coffee, tell the roaster which brewer you use rather than asking for an unspecified “universal” grind.

Does a glass Chemex mean the whole brewer was made in the United States?

No, the company’s American identity does not establish the glass’s manufacturing origin. Chemex states that Classic and Glass Handle Series glass is made in Taiwan and Germany, while Handblown Series glass is made in Croatia. Its company page describes inspection, polishing and hand-tying at its Massachusetts factory.

Should I check my water before choosing a brewer?

Check your local supply rather than assuming there is one UK-wide hardness figure. Your water supplier’s published information is the appropriate starting point; Thames Water, for example, provides a postcode-based water-quality lookup. For a moka pot, also follow the manufacturer’s valve-cleaning instructions because scale can obstruct the valve.

Where to go next
