Dualit coffee machines range from compact capsule brewers to hands-on espresso machines, with the current main UK collection centred on the Pod Machine and Espressivo Pro. The British, family-owned brand suits readers choosing between capsule convenience and making espresso themselves, but its domestic coffee machines should not be mistaken for commercial office equipment.
In short
- The Pod Machine accepts Nespresso Original-format capsules, not the Vertuo system.
- The Espressivo Pro has an integrated grinder, but you still prepare the portafilter and steam milk yourself.
- Dualit claims 40 grind settings, a 250 g bean hopper and a 2.8 litre water tank for the Espressivo Pro.
- Older Dualit models remain visible in product and support pages. A listing does not establish current availability.
- Check repair eligibility for the exact model: Dualit’s published repair provision is conditional, not a promise that every coffee machine is fully repairable.
Dualit: company background and fact panel
Dualit was founded in 1945 by inventor Max Gort-Barten. Its background is in kitchen and catering appliances, particularly toasters, rather than coffee equipment alone. The company describes itself as independently owned and family-run, with its UK base in Crawley, West Sussex.
That history explains the appeal of the name, but it is not evidence that a particular coffee machine will share the construction, service life or repairability of a Classic Toaster. Assess the coffee appliance on its own specification and support arrangements.
| Fact | Published position |
|---|---|
| Company | Dualit Limited |
| Ownership and parent group | Describes itself as independent and family-owned, rather than part of an outside appliance group |
| Brand country and UK base | British brand, based in Crawley, West Sussex |
| Main machine classes | Capsule machines and portafilter espresso machines; older listings also include the Bean to Go automatic machine |
| UK support | Manufacturer contact team, online manuals, troubleshooting and selected spare parts; repairs depend on model, fault and parts availability |
“British brand” should not be read as confirmation that every machine is manufactured in Britain. If manufacturing origin matters to your purchase, ask for written confirmation for the exact product.
For the wider choice of equipment and brewing systems, start with coffee machine brands.
The current Dualit coffee machine range
The main UK coffee-machine collection retrieved for this profile displayed the Espressivo Pro and Pod Machine. Separate Dualit pages still describe other machines, making it worth distinguishing the main collection from older or out-of-stock listings.
All specifications below are manufacturer claims checked in November 2026, not independently measured results.
Pod Machine: capsule convenience
The Pod Machine is the straightforward choice for someone who does not want to grind, dose or tamp coffee. It accepts Dualit capsules and other compatible Nespresso Original-format capsules, with espresso and lungo buttons. A lungo is a longer extraction through the capsule.
Dualit specifies an 800 ml removable water tank and dimensions of 100 mm wide, 334 mm deep and 225 mm high. The narrow width is useful, but measure the depth too: a slim machine can still occupy a substantial strip of worktop.
The manufacturer claims a 40-second heat-up time. Factory drink settings are 35 ml for espresso and 70 ml for lungo, with programmable volumes. These are dispensing settings, not guarantees of flavour.
There is no integrated milk-steaming system listed. Choose it primarily for capsule coffee, or allow space for separate milk equipment. Our guide to Nespresso machines explains the surrounding system choices without assuming all capsules are interchangeable.
Espressivo Pro: espresso with an integrated grinder
The Espressivo Pro is a different proposition. It combines a grinder and espresso machine, but coffee is prepared in a portafilter, the removable handle holding the coffee basket. You grind into it, tamp the grounds, fit it to the machine and empty it afterwards.
Dualit claims 40 grinder settings, adjustable pre-infusion, brewing temperature and extraction volume. Pre-infusion wets the coffee before the main extraction. Its published features also include dual thermoblock heating, allowing brewing and milk steaming at the same time, and a separate hot-water outlet.
The claimed dimensions are 341 mm wide, 300 mm deep and 412 mm high. Alongside the machine footprint, plan access to the hopper and tank, somewhere to put the milk jug, and space to handle the portafilter.
Dualit uses “bean-to-cup” wording in its marketing, but this is not a fully automatic workplace machine. The meaningful distinction is the workflow: an integrated grinder does not remove tamping, handling grounds or steaming milk.
Older models and capsule compatibility
Older Dualit machines can be relevant to existing owners and readers considering remaining stock or second-hand equipment. However, do not assume that accessories, capsule holders or cleaning instructions transfer between models.
Café Plus is a capsule machine with programmable dispensing and a dedicated tea function. Its retrieved product page showed it as out of stock. It should not be confused with the current Pod Machine, whose published controls centre on espresso and lungo.
The Espresso Coffee Machine accepts ground coffee and ESE pods, with manual dispensing and milk frothing. ESE means Easy Serving Espresso: these are pre-portioned coffee servings in paper, not Nespresso-style capsules. Its product page also showed it as out of stock.
The 3 in 1 and Espress-Auto combine multiple coffee formats. Dualit describes the 3 in 1 as accepting ground coffee, ESE pods and specified capsules; the Espress-Auto adds programmable dispensing in the manufacturer’s buying guide. Check that any older machine includes the correct holders and adaptors before buying it.
Bean to Go is an automatic grinder-equipped machine described in Dualit’s older range material. Its continued appearance in support pages is useful for owners, but does not establish that it remains available to order.
The practical rule is simple: identify the machine first, then check its approved coffee format. “Pod”, “capsule” and “automatic” are not precise enough descriptions on their own.
Pros, cons and who Dualit machines suit
Our assessment uses four criteria: preparation effort, coffee-format flexibility, milk workflow and published support. It is a specification-based assessment, not a comparative taste test.
| Option | Main advantage | Main limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pod Machine | Simple capsule preparation and narrow body | No integrated milk steaming; Original-format compatibility only | Someone prioritising straightforward black coffee |
| Espressivo Pro | Integrated grinder and adjustable espresso controls | Manual preparation and cleaning remain necessary | A home user who wants to learn espresso |
| Older ground-coffee and multi-format models | Choice of formats on specified machines | Availability, accessories and repair support need checking | Existing owners or careful second-hand buyers |
Advantages
- Clearly different preparation routes. The Pod Machine and Espressivo Pro serve different needs rather than offering cosmetic variations on the same workflow.
- Control for the learner. The Pro’s adjustable settings give an interested user scope to experiment rather than relying entirely on fixed programmes.
- Published UK support routes. Manuals, troubleshooting and model-specific spare-parts information are available through Dualit.
- Flexibility on selected older machines. Ground coffee and ESE compatibility may appeal to owners who do not want to depend on one capsule format.
Limitations
- The range needs careful reading. Older collection pages and product listings coexist with the main collection. Confirm availability and the exact model supplied.
- Milk drinks require extra involvement. The Pod Machine needs separate milk equipment; the Pro requires manual steaming.
- Repairability is not uniform. Dualit lists selected repairable products, subject to the fault and availability of spares.
- Specifications do not establish reliability. This profile does not rank Dualit above competing brands for longevity, temperature stability or cup quality.
If capsule preparation appeals but you want a broader comparison of manufacturers and systems, read Philips and Krups machines.
UK support, guarantees and consumer rights
Dualit publishes a UK telephone number, 01293 652500, and the email address info@dualit.com. Its contact page asks owners to provide the product code, model and serial numbers, ideally with purchase details. Gather these before contacting support.
The published general guarantee period is one year, subject to its terms. For purchases through another retailer, Dualit directs owners back to that retailer in the first instance. Failure to maintain the machine according to its instructions, including descaling, is among the stated exclusions.
Repair support deserves a separate check. Dualit’s published repairable-products list names the Espress-Auto, 3 in 1 and Bean to Go, but makes repair conditional on the fault and spare-parts stock. Do not treat that older list as a complete statement of support for newer models: ask specifically about the machine you intend to buy.
For UK consumer purchases, the manufacturer’s guarantee does not replace statutory rights against the seller. GOV.UK explains that rights concerning faulty goods can continue after a guarantee expires. Business buyers should not assume that consumer remedies apply to workplace procurement.
Before purchase, ask who handles faults, which components can be replaced and what happens if the machine cannot be repaired. Where additional equipment or support services are involved, request an itemised written quotation.
Ownership details that matter beyond the brochure
Cleaning and local water
For the Espressivo Pro, Dualit’s manual requires attention to the portafilter, drip tray and steam wand, alongside grinder cleaning and descaling. It instructs users to flush and wipe the wand after steaming. This routine is part of making milk drinks, not an occasional maintenance task.
Check your own water supplier’s hardness information rather than using one UK-wide assumption. Thames Water, for example, provides an area lookup using a postcode. Follow the exact model’s instructions for water treatment, descaler compatibility and rinsing, rather than borrowing another Dualit machine’s procedure.
Workplace suitability
The Pod Machine and Espressivo Pro manuals describe household use and contain restrictions concerning professional or semi-professional use. The word “Pro” in the product name is not commercial approval.
For a shared workplace, obtain written confirmation of suitability and guarantee cover before ordering. Describe expected use and peak demand, not just headcount. Ask who will clean it, how a fault will be handled and whether a demonstration can reproduce your busiest period.
What a demonstration should prove
For capsule equipment, try your preferred capsule and cup. For the Pro, ask to see the complete process, including grinding, tamping, steaming and cleaning, rather than only a finished espresso.
If your interest is moving towards specialist manual espresso equipment, compare the workflow and support questions in Rancilio, Lelit, Rocket, ECM and Profitec. Choose Dualit coffee machines by the work you want to do each day, not by the familiarity of the badge.
FAQ
Are Dualit coffee machines made in Britain?
British ownership does not establish the manufacturing country of an individual coffee machine. Dualit identifies itself as a British, independently owned family business, but that is a company description, not a model-specific origin declaration. Ask Dualit or the seller to confirm manufacturing origin in writing if it is a deciding factor.
Can I use decaffeinated coffee in a Dualit machine?
Yes, provided it is supplied in the format approved for your machine. Choose compatible decaffeinated capsules for a capsule model, or suitable beans or ground coffee for an appropriate espresso machine. On an integrated-grinder machine, consult the cleaning instructions when changing beans rather than assuming the previous coffee has completely cleared.
Do I need to buy a separate grinder?
Not for the Pod Machine or the Espressivo Pro. Capsules contain prepared coffee, while the Pro includes its own grinder. Older ground-coffee machines do not necessarily include one, although specified models can accept ready-ground coffee or ESE pods. Check the exact product rather than assuming every Dualit espresso machine has the same equipment.
Where to go next
Read Coffee Machine Brands to place Dualit within the wider UK choice, and Nespresso Coffee Machines to understand capsule-system differences. Rancilio, Lelit, Rocket, ECM and Profitec is the useful next read if hands-on espresso preparation interests you more than capsule convenience.
