An unbranded premium filter coffee brewer with a glass jug, coffee dripping

Images for illustration only. They are not representative of the manufacturers’ actual machines.

Moccamaster and Wilfa make automatic filter coffee brewers for people who want a jug of coffee rather than espresso or one-touch cappuccino. Moccamaster’s strongest distinction is its documented modular construction and repair provision; Wilfa offers a broader choice of coffee equipment, including brewers with removable water tanks and several grinder families. Choose between them by batch size, jug type, controls and support arrangements, not by the badge alone.

In short

  • Compare litres, not advertised cups. A 1.25-litre reservoir represents five 250 ml portions of input water, before water retained by the grounds.
  • Choose the jug deliberately. The Moccamaster KBG Select uses glass and a warming plate; the KBGT and Wilfa Performance Thermo use insulated jugs.
  • Check the exact certification. ECBC lists approved brewers from both brands, but approval should not be extended automatically to unrelated products.
  • A grinder is separate. The brewers discussed here take ground coffee, rather than grinding beans internally.
  • Workplace use changes the warranty position. Wilfa’s UK guarantee excludes commercial use; Moccamaster publishes separate professional-use terms.

Moccamaster and Wilfa at a glance

These are filter-coffee options within the wider coffee machine brands guide. The useful starting distinction is between a specialist filter-brewer manufacturer and a broader household-appliance company with an extensive coffee range.

Company information, support routes and product ranges checked in November 2026. The Wilfa ownership entry comes from published Norwegian corporate records; technical details come from the manufacturers.

Technivorm was founded by Gerard Smit in 1964, and the first Moccamaster followed in 1968. Wilfa dates its business history to 1948. Norwegian design should not be confused with Norwegian manufacture: Wilfa’s own reporting describes an outsourced production model.

What are Moccamaster filter brewers like?

Moccamaster’s appeal is a relatively direct brewing routine: add water, fit a paper filter, weigh in ground coffee and select the appropriate setting. The KBG Select has a glass jug, an automatic drip stop and a switch for full or half batches. Its published capacity is 1.25 litres, with a claimed full-jug brewing time of about six minutes.

The half-batch setting matters because a smaller quantity of grounds changes how water passes through the coffee bed. Moccamaster says this setting slows the brewing flow, giving the water more contact time. It is a specific adjustment for batch size, not a general-purpose menu of programmable brewing recipes.

For coffee served over a longer period, compare the KBGT, which brews into an insulated jug rather than using the KBG Select’s warming plate. Moccamaster’s European brochure recommends the KBG Select when smaller batches are a regular requirement, rather than assuming every model handles them identically.

The Cup-One takes a different approach, brewing directly into a single drinking vessel. It deserves consideration if a full jug would routinely be unnecessary; it is not simply a smaller colour variation of the batch brewer.

Moccamaster’s advantages and limitations

Advantages: straightforward controls, a choice of serving formats and a manufacturer-supported repair approach. Technivorm states that its machines use modular construction with replaceable components, while jugs, lids and filter holders are sold separately.

Limitations: the KBG Select’s reservoir is not removable, and its controls are deliberately limited. Choose it for a repeatable filter routine, not because you want extensive programming or automatic milk preparation. The published equipment specification lists no built-in bean container or start timer.

What are Wilfa filter brewers like?

Wilfa’s current UK range includes Zense, Zense Alux, Performance Compact, Performance and Performance Thermo models. These names represent different products, so check the tank, jug and controls on the precise machine being offered.

The Performance provides a useful illustration of Wilfa’s approach. It has a removable water tank, adjustable flow control and a pump system that Wilfa says empties the water circuit after brewing. The manufacturer specifies brewing water at 92 to 96°C; that is a published claim, not a measurement made for this article.

Its basket control changes the rate at which brewed coffee leaves the filter. Wilfa instructs users to match that control to the quantity of water being brewed, helping manage contact time across different batch sizes. This offers useful adjustment, but also gives the user another setting to get right.

The Performance Thermo combines a removable 1.25-litre tank with an insulated jug. Its manual includes specific brewing and pouring lids, so correct assembly is part of normal operation rather than an incidental detail.

Wilfa’s advantages and limitations

Advantages: removable reservoirs on the Performance models, adjustable flow control and a choice of glass-jug or insulated-jug arrangements. Wilfa UK also lists replacement tanks, servers, baskets and selected grinder parts.

Limitations: the Performance’s pump is audible, which Wilfa acknowledges in its support guidance. Parts listed online are not necessarily immediately available, and the UK household warranty must not be mistaken for workplace cover.

What about their coffee grinders?

Both brands offer separate grinders. A burr grinder crushes beans between shaped grinding surfaces, with the spacing adjusted to change particle size.

Moccamaster’s KM5 uses flat steel burrs and stepless adjustment, meaning the dial is not restricted to fixed clicks. The manufacturer explicitly says it is not suitable for espresso grinding. It is a natural shortlist option for someone building a filter-focused setup, but matching the brewer and grinder brands is not necessary.

Wilfa offers more distinct grinder families. Its current UK listings include Zense, Zense Alux, Uniform and Uniform Evo. The Zense specification lists 40 mm steel burrs and 30 settings; the Uniform+ lists 58 mm flat burrs and 41 settings.

Do not confuse the Uniform+ with the Uniform Evo. The Evo specification lists 64 mm flat burrs, additional micro-adjustment and a scale integrated into the lid. Those are meaningful equipment differences, although burr diameter alone does not establish which grinder produces the better-tasting coffee.

Wilfa markets several grinders for espresso as well as filter. Treat that as a manufacturer’s application claim, not proof that every model will offer the adjustment or workflow your espresso machine needs. For that separate buying decision, see the espresso machine alternatives.

What do the certifications actually mean?

The European Coffee Brewing Centre, usually shortened to ECBC, publishes an approved-brewer register. Its current list includes all Moccamaster models and named Wilfa brewers, including Performance, Performance Thermo, Performance Compact and several Zense models.

The Specialty Coffee Association, or SCA, operates a separate home-equipment certification programme involving third-party testing. Its retrieved register lists several Technivorm models, including the KBGV Select, KBGT and Cup-One. The KBGV name appears on the US-market listing; do not silently substitute it for every UK KBG Select variant.

Certification is useful evidence that a specified brewer meets the programme’s requirements. It is not a prediction of service life, an endorsement of every product carrying the brand, or a guarantee that any beans and grind setting will taste good. Likewise, grinder approval and brewer approval concern different equipment.

Build, repairability and UK support

Moccamaster provides unusually explicit documentation about modular construction and repair. Its manufacturer also publishes a repair-request route and says machines can often be repaired beyond the guarantee period. This supports a repairability argument, but not an unconditional promise that every fault can always be fixed.

Wilfa should not be dismissed as having no parts support. Its UK catalogue includes replacement brewer components and a Uniform burr head. However, a catalogue entry does not establish stock continuity, internal electrical-parts availability or local workshop access. Ask who will diagnose the machine, where it must be sent and whether your exact model is supported.

For domestic purchases, both brands publish five-year guarantees with exclusions. Wilfa’s UK guarantee is for private household use and excludes commercial use. Moccamaster publishes a two-year term for professional machines or commercial and professional use. An office buyer should obtain written confirmation covering the intended installation and workload.

A manufacturer’s guarantee does not replace a consumer’s statutory rights against the seller. Business purchasers should not assume consumer protections apply to their purchase in the same way. Our guide to warranties and support explains what to establish before ordering.

Which brand suits you?

Use these criteria first: usual batch size, serving pattern, tank access, preferred controls and confirmed support. The following is an editorial assessment of the published features, not a hands-on performance ranking.

Priority Moccamaster fit Wilfa fit
Simple jug brewing KBG Select offers a direct full or half-batch routine Compare the controls on the exact Zense or Performance model
Removable water tank KBG Select has a fixed reservoir Performance models offer removable tanks
Insulated serving Consider KBGT Consider Performance Thermo
Filter-focused grinder KM5 explicitly excludes espresso Several grinder families offer different specifications
Repair planning Explicit modular-construction and repair documentation UK parts catalogue; confirm model-specific repair arrangements

The features behind this assessment are manufacturer-published specifications. Neither this table nor the guarantee length establishes comparative reliability.

Before deciding, check your local water report and the machine’s descaling instructions. Thames Water, for example, provides a postcode-based water-quality lookup; there is no sensible single hardness figure to apply to every UK workplace.

For context, the SCA’s Coffee Standards, revised 2018, gives calcium hardness of 50 to 175 ppm as calcium carbonate in its brewing-water table. That is calcium hardness, not automatically the same measurement as a supplier’s total-hardness figure. Use the document’s named measurement rather than treating every hardness number as interchangeable.

My preference would be Moccamaster where simple operation and documented repair construction lead the decision, and Wilfa where removable-tank convenience or a particular grinder’s controls matter more. If you prefer a kettle and a hands-on brewing routine, compare the manual brewing options before committing to either.

FAQ

Can I use either brewer without buying a grinder?

Yes, these brewers accept ground coffee, so a separate grinder is optional. Buy coffee ground for automatic filter brewing rather than assuming an espresso grind will work. Wilfa’s manual identifies excessively fine coffee as a possible cause of basket overflow, so grind suitability matters even when the brewer itself is operating correctly.

How much coffee should I use for a full Wilfa Performance Thermo batch?

Wilfa’s manual recommends 75 g for 1.25 litres of water, equivalent to 60 g per litre. Treat that as a starting dose, not a compulsory recipe for every coffee. Keep the water quantity consistent when comparing grind adjustments, and measure the water added rather than assuming the finished jug will contain the same volume.

Can I put milk in the water reservoir?

No, the reservoir is for fresh water, not milk or a premixed drink. Wilfa’s manual specifies fresh water only, and Moccamaster’s instructions describe filling with clean water. Brew the coffee first and add milk to the drinking vessel separately; do not use the brewer’s water circuit to heat it.

Where to go next

Read Coffee Machine Brands to place Moccamaster and Wilfa alongside other machine classes, then Bodum, Hario, Chemex and Bialetti if manual brewing also appeals. Before choosing either brand, use Coffee Machine Warranties and Support to check the seller’s responsibilities and the practical repair route.
