Specialty Coffee Expo was the Specialty Coffee Association’s flagship North American coffee trade show, bringing together equipment, coffee sourcing, education and competitions. Its final edition under that name took place in Houston from 25 to 27 April 2025; the event continued as World of Coffee San Diego from 10 to 12 April 2026, with New Orleans announced for 9 to 11 April 2027.
In short
- Organiser: the Specialty Coffee Association, usually shortened to SCA.
- Format: a business-focused exhibition with tastings, lectures, practical workshops and supplier meetings.
- Education: Houston’s 2025 programme advertised more than 60 lectures and 25 workshops.
- Competitions: the championship changes with the edition, rather than every world title appearing at every show.
- Next North American edition: World of Coffee New Orleans, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, from 9 to 11 April 2027.
What was Specialty Coffee Expo?
Specialty Coffee Expo was a meeting place for the businesses and people involved in producing, buying, roasting, preparing and serving coffee. Its organising principle was business-to-business, often abbreviated to B2B: exhibitors presented products and services to people making professional decisions.
That does not mean it was useful only to large companies. The event’s audience included roasters, retailers, food and beverage professionals and interested coffee enthusiasts. Someone developing a coffee business could investigate equipment, attend education sessions and meet potential suppliers within the same visit.
The distinction from a consumer festival is the purpose of the conversation. Rather than simply asking whether a coffee tastes good, a professional visitor might ask how consistently it can be supplied, what support accompanies a machine, or how a preparation method fits an existing operation.
For a beginner, the simplest description is a coffee industry exhibition with a substantial learning programme, not a competition with a few equipment stands attached. Our guide to coffee trade shows explains how that format differs from other event types.

Who organised it, and why did the name change?
The organiser was the Specialty Coffee Association, an international trade association whose work includes research, standards, education and events. The present SCA was established in 2017 through the unification of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, or SCAA, and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe, or SCAE.
Those older initials explain why historical references can be confusing. An account mentioning an SCAA event belongs to the American association’s earlier organisational history, rather than necessarily describing a different contemporary organiser.
On 8 April 2025, the SCA announced that its North American Specialty Coffee Expo would become part of the World of Coffee event brand. Houston would be the last edition using the Expo name, followed by San Diego under the new identity.
The announcement presented this as continuity: the North American show would retain its professional community, exhibition, workshops and competitions while joining the wider World of Coffee series. It was not an announcement that coffee exhibitions in North America were ending.
This article preserves the explanation of the former name and its transition. For the broader event family, continue to World of Coffee.
Specialty Coffee Expo dates and locations: the transition
The key recent dates are below. The Houston and San Diego editions are past events; New Orleans is the announced forthcoming edition as checked in November 2026.
| Date | Name or milestone | Location | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2017 | Present SCA established | Organisational milestone | SCAA and SCAE unified |
| 8 April 2025 | Rebranding announced | SCA announcement | North American Expo would become World of Coffee |
| 25 to 27 April 2025 | Specialty Coffee Expo | George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston | Final edition under the Expo name |
| 10 to 12 April 2026 | World of Coffee San Diego | San Diego Convention Center | First North American edition under the new name |
| 9 to 11 April 2027 | World of Coffee New Orleans | New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center | Announced next North American edition |
For planning purposes, the city and year matter as much as the brand. An archived Houston workshop listing is evidence of what happened in Houston, not a promise that the same session will appear in New Orleans.
The same caution applies to registration pages, opening hours and competition timetables. Start with the current edition’s official information, then check individual activities rather than building an itinerary from an older programme.
What happened at the show?
Expo combined several different ways of learning and doing business. Understanding those layers helps explain why a visitor might spend relatively little time watching competitions yet still have a productive visit.
The exhibition and supplier conversations
The exhibition put coffee businesses and their products in front of professional visitors. Equipment demonstrations and face-to-face discussions provided opportunities to investigate how a product might fit a particular operation.
Treat a demonstration as the beginning of an assessment, not its conclusion. Ask the exhibitor to separate published specifications from what is being demonstrated, and request supporting documentation for claims that matter to your decision.
For an office machine, useful questions include cleaning responsibilities, milk-system care, water requirements, servicing arrangements and support in the UK. A convincing demonstration should lead to a more precise shortlist, not an immediate assumption of suitability.
Tasting and coffee sourcing
Houston’s 2025 programme included the Cupping Exchange, with sessions hosted by producers, exporters and importers. It also featured Roaster Village, where visitors could taste coffees and meet roasting businesses.
Cupping is a structured way of tasting and comparing coffees. At a trade show, use the opportunity to ask questions alongside tasting: who produced the coffee, how it was processed, and what information accompanies a potential supply relationship.
Keep tasting notes separate from supplier notes. “Floral and citrus-like” describes a sensory impression; availability, traceability and supply arrangements answer different questions.
Meetings and professional exchange
Houston also introduced a Coffee Business Lounge and included Green Coffee Connect, focused on the green coffee supply chain. Green coffee means coffee beans before roasting.
For the wider choice of formats and audiences, use our coffee events guide. Here, the central point is that Expo combined commercial conversations with learning rather than treating either as an afterthought.
What education did Specialty Coffee Expo offer?
Houston’s 2025 education announcement advertised more than 60 lecture sessions and 25 interactive workshops. Its subjects included sustainability, business development, science, technology and practical coffee skills.
Lectures and workshops served different purposes. A lecture could introduce research, explain an industry issue or offer an approach to a business problem. A workshop provided a more hands-on setting for applying a technique or working through a question.
The published Houston programme included introductory cupping, espresso calibration, roasting, latte art, sensory assessment and management topics. It also introduced retail business education workshops, showing that the learning programme extended beyond drink preparation.
Choose sessions by the question you want answered. A newcomer might benefit most from introductory tasting; a roaster might prioritise sensory assessment; a manager might need leadership or operational material.
For more advanced visitors, the useful habit is to examine the evidence behind a presentation. Ask whether a conclusion comes from research, a commercial case study or the speaker’s professional experience. Each can be informative, but they do not support identical claims.
Do not assume that attending a session automatically provides a qualification. If certification matters, verify the exact course, assessment and completion requirements before registering.
Which competitions did it host?
Competition hosting depended on the edition. The event name alone does not tell you which championship was on the programme.
Houston’s final Specialty Coffee Expo in 2025 hosted the World Coffee Roasting Championship, its first appearance in the United States. The competition concerned assessing coffee, developing an appropriate roasting approach and the resulting cup quality.
The successor event in San Diego in April 2026 hosted the World Latte Art Championship. Its judging emphasised visual attributes, creativity, matching patterns, contrast and overall performance.
For New Orleans in April 2027, the SCA has announced the World Coffee Roasting Championship. That is a confirmed element of the forthcoming programme, not a reason to assume every other world championship will also be there.
Expo also featured the Best New Product Awards and Coffee Design Awards. These recognise products and design rather than awarding an individual a world coffee preparation title.
When researching a particular competitor or discipline, therefore, check the championship’s own event listing. A general description of the exhibition is not a substitute for the edition-specific competition schedule.
How to approach the successor event as a UK visitor
Our editorial recommendation is to start with a work question, not a list of stands. The following approach suits a supplier researcher, roaster, trainer or workplace coffee decision maker.
- Define your purpose. Write down what you need to understand, compare or arrange. Distinguish essential meetings from general exploration.
- Match the programme to that purpose. Identify relevant exhibitors, lectures, tastings and workshops. Check whether each activity needs a separate booking.
- Arrange focused conversations. Give suppliers your actual application in advance. For workplace equipment, explain the drinks required, likely usage pattern, available space and who will clean it.
- Collect evidence in a consistent format. Record the product, contact, documentation received, unanswered questions and agreed next action. Keep marketing statements clearly labelled.
- Follow up before deciding. Request an itemised written quotation and confirmation of UK supply, installation, training, maintenance and support where relevant.
For office procurement, do not let impressive brewing distract from daily operation. Ask who performs each cleaning task, how consumables are replenished and what happens when the equipment needs attention.
If comparing overall ownership requirements, gather the machine or supply agreement, installation, water treatment, ingredients, cleaning materials, maintenance and servicing terms. Use your workplace’s expected drink volume and staffing arrangements to evaluate the quotations on a consistent basis.
Finally, allow room to change your mind. The most useful outcome of a trade show may be discovering that your original specification asked the wrong questions. Specialty Coffee Expo’s successor is best approached as a place to investigate and learn, with final decisions supported by documents and follow-up.
FAQ
Can someone who does not work in coffee attend?
The organiser’s current description explicitly includes coffee enthusiasts as well as professionals. However, the event remains business-focused, so check the current registration conditions and choose activities suited to your interests. An introductory tasting or lecture may be more approachable than a highly specialised sourcing discussion or technical workshop.
Does an event badge include every tasting?
Do not assume that it does. The current programme distinguishes public cuppings from private sessions, and individual activities can have their own access arrangements. Check the session listing, whether advance registration is needed and whether the host has restricted attendance before treating a tasting as part of your itinerary.
Can I watch competition performances without travelling?
Yes, the World Coffee Championships provides online viewing for relevant events. Its San Diego 2026 page offered a livestream and directed viewers to recorded performances on the WCC YouTube channel. Check the championship’s current page for coverage and timings, since watching the competition does not provide access to the exhibition or workshops.
