Nespresso coffee machines use pre-portioned capsules rather than grinding whole beans, making them a straightforward choice when convenience matters more than control over brewing. Choose Original primarily for short espresso-style drinks and Original-compatible capsule choice, or Vertuo for a wider range of drink sizes, including larger mugs. The two capsule systems are not interchangeable.

In short

  • Choose the capsule system before choosing the machine: a different manufacturer’s badge does not change Original into Vertuo.
  • Original’s standard drink sizes include 25 ml ristretto, 40 ml espresso and 110 ml lungo.
  • Vertuo includes 40 ml espresso, 80 ml double espresso, 150 ml gran lungo and 230 ml mug formats; larger formats have model-specific compatibility.
  • Milk preparation varies substantially: a separate frother, an integrated milk container and a steam wand involve different routines.
  • Plan capsule collection as well as brewing. Recycling depends on returning capsules through an accepted route.

Nespresso at a glance

Nespresso is both a coffee brand and a capsule brewing system. That distinction helps explain why a machine can carry the Nespresso name alongside another appliance maker’s badge.

Fact Published information
Company Nestlé Nespresso SA
Parent group Nestlé
Country of origin Switzerland
Main machine classes Original and Vertuo domestic capsule machines, plus a separate Professional range
UK support Nespresso machine assistance, model-specific manuals, troubleshooting and repair support; arrangements depend on the product

These are manufacturer-published details, checked in November 2026. They establish what the systems offer, not how reliably an individual machine will perform over its lifetime.

For the wider choice beyond capsules, start with the coffee machine brands hub. This profile concentrates on Nespresso’s systems rather than comparing every appliance maker’s complete range.

How the Nespresso system developed

Nespresso grew from Nestlé’s work on portioned espresso during the 1970s. The central idea was to package ground coffee in a capsule and brew it in a matching machine, reducing the preparation normally required of the user.

Its corporate history records these milestones:

  • 1986: Nespresso launched with its first machine and four coffees, initially entering Switzerland, Italy and Japan.
  • 1989: The Nespresso Club introduced a direct customer-service relationship.
  • 1991: The first Nespresso capsule recycling programme began in Switzerland.
  • 2014: Vertuo launched in North America, extending the proposition towards larger coffees.
  • 2017: Vertuo launched in the UK and Ireland.

Original and Vertuo now sit alongside one another. Vertuo is not simply a newer machine that takes the old capsules: it is a different brewing system with a different capsule format.

Original versus Vertuo Nespresso coffee machines

Choose between the systems using four criteria: your usual drink size, preferred brewing style, capsule choice and willingness to accept machine-controlled settings.

Criterion Original Vertuo
Brewing method Pump-driven, high-pressure extraction Centrifusion, combining water flow with capsule rotation
Typical formats Ristretto 25 ml, espresso 40 ml, lungo 110 ml Espresso 40 ml, double espresso 80 ml, gran lungo 150 ml, mug 230 ml
Capsule choice Nespresso Original and third-party capsules explicitly labelled compatible Vertuo-format capsules; Original-compatible capsules do not fit
Brewing controls Model-dependent drink-volume programming Capsule barcode sets brewing parameters; additional controls vary
Best starting point for Short-coffee drinkers and those wanting compatible capsule choice People wanting several drink sizes, especially larger coffees

What the brewing difference means

Original forces water through the capsule using a pump. Nespresso advertises a 19-bar system, but that headline specification is not a taste score or evidence that one machine makes better coffee than another.

Vertuo reads a barcode on the capsule and adjusts brewing parameters, including water volume and rotation. It produces a prominent foam layer, which Nespresso calls crema. Here, crema means the foam on the coffee’s surface, not added cream.

Neither system gives you the same freedom as selecting beans, adjusting a grinder and changing the coffee dose yourself. The capsule fixes much of the recipe before it enters the machine. That is the attraction for someone wanting fewer decisions, and the limitation for someone who enjoys making them.

Check larger Vertuo formats individually

The UK Vertuo range also lists 355 ml XL and 535 ml carafe coffees. However, those formats have restricted machine compatibility.

Do not assume that every capsule carrying the Vertuo name works in every Vertuo model. Check the particular capsule’s compatibility statement against the exact machine, especially when buying an older or second-hand model.

Who makes Nespresso machines?

UK Nespresso machines appear under appliance brands including Magimix, Krups, De’Longhi and Sage. Published examples include Magimix CitiZ, Krups Essenza Mini, De’Longhi Vertuo Lattissima and Sage Vertuo Creatista.

It is useful to separate three things:

  • Nespresso identifies the coffee system.
  • Original or Vertuo identifies the capsule family.
  • The model and appliance partner identify the particular machine and its features.

A Krups Original machine does not need a special Krups-only coffee capsule. Equally, seeing the same appliance brand on two machines does not mean that they accept the same capsules.

Compare the exact model rather than choosing by badge alone. Check its water tank, cup clearance, capsule container, opening mechanism, milk equipment and cleaning instructions. For example, Krups publishes a 0.6-litre tank for its Essenza Mini, a specification worth considering if several people will use it consecutively.

Our Philips and Krups profile puts Krups’s Nespresso models in the context of its other coffee equipment. A published product specification does not establish that one partner’s machines are more reliable than another’s, and this profile does not rank them on that basis.

Capsules and milk drinks

Read the compatibility wording

For Original, look for an explicit Original-compatibility statement. L’OR, for example, distinguishes its Classic capsules, which it says work with Nespresso Original machines, from its larger XXL capsules, which are for the L’OR BARISTA system.

That is why “Nespresso-compatible” needs careful reading. Confirm the system and any exclusions on the capsule maker’s current packaging or website, rather than relying on capsule colour or a retailer’s abbreviated description.

Nespresso’s own ranges include decaffeinated options. Choose the coffee as well as the hardware: before committing to a system, try the sort of drink you will actually make, served black or with your usual milk.

Match the milk system to your routine

A basic capsule machine may brew only the coffee, with milk prepared separately. Other machines add more equipment:

  • Separate frother: an appliance such as an Aeroccino heats and froths milk independently.
  • Integrated milk container: the De’Longhi Vertuo Lattissima dispenses milk recipes through its built-in system.
  • Steam wand: the Sage Vertuo Creatista textures milk in a jug, with selectable temperature and texture settings.

These are different workflows, not merely cosmetic variations. Ask to see the cleaning routine, including removable milk parts or wand care, before choosing. Automatic milk preparation does not remove the need to clean equipment that touches milk.

If capsule flexibility is your priority, compare the relevant models in our Dualit profile, checking each machine’s stated compatibility rather than assuming all capsule machines work alike.

Cleaning, support and recycling

Capsules remove loose-ground preparation, but not routine maintenance. Empty the used-capsule container and drip tray, clean the accessible parts according to the manual, and follow the model’s milk-system instructions.

Descaling removes internal mineral deposits. Nespresso says these deposits can affect flow, temperature and performance, so follow the particular machine’s instructions and alerts rather than applying one universal schedule. Check your local water supplier’s hardness information where the machine’s setup or maintenance instructions ask for it.

For support, keep the model details, serial number and proof of purchase. Nespresso provides machine-specific assistance and says replacement removable parts are available for many models, with exceptions for some older discontinued machines. Check support arrangements before buying second-hand.

For a UK consumer purchase, the retailer’s obligations concerning faulty or misdescribed goods are separate from a manufacturer’s guarantee. GOV.UK’s returns guidance explains those obligations; a workplace buying as a business should check its contract rather than assume consumer terms apply.

Make capsule returns part of the routine

Nespresso lists UK return options including boutiques, collection services and Podback drop-off routes, with availability depending on location and service. Use the required bag and current instructions; do not assume ordinary household recycling accepts used capsules.

Nespresso says returned aluminium capsules are processed to separate the metal from the coffee grounds. That describes a recycling route, not proof that every capsule sold is returned or that the system has no environmental impact.

For a workplace, confirm the business recycling arrangement separately. Nespresso publishes a dedicated Professional recycling service.

Pros, cons and who Nespresso suits

The following judgement uses convenience, capsule flexibility, drink sizes, cleaning and workplace suitability as its criteria.

Main advantages

  • Less preparation: portioned capsules remove the need to weigh and grind coffee for each drink.
  • Straightforward choice of drink: Original focuses on short formats, while Vertuo provides more cup sizes.
  • Different milk workflows: buyers can choose separate frothing, integrated dispensing or a steam wand.
  • Published support resources: manuals and troubleshooting are available by model.

Main limitations

  • System commitment: Original and Vertuo capsules cannot be swapped between machines.
  • Restricted recipe control: the capsule determines the coffee and dose.
  • Ongoing handling: used capsules need storage and an accepted return route.
  • Model-specific compromises: tank size, milk cleaning and capsule compatibility still need checking.

Our view: Original is the more natural starting point for someone who mainly drinks short coffees and values third-party capsule choice. Vertuo is the more natural starting point for someone who wants espresso and larger coffees from one capsule system. Taste both before deciding, because convenience cannot compensate for disliking the drink.

What about an office?

Nespresso Professional is a separate business range using Professional capsules, not domestic Original or Vertuo capsules. Do not choose a domestic model for shared workplace use solely because it fits the counter.

Give the supplier your expected daily drinks, busiest break period, milk requirements and available space. Request written confirmation of intended use, capacity, warranty coverage, servicing and recycling, plus itemised written quotations.

For Nespresso coffee machines, the decisive question is not which badge looks best. It is which capsule system and cleaning routine your household or workplace will be happy to keep using. If choosing beans and controlling extraction are the main attraction, explore a different machine class, starting with our La Marzocco profile.

FAQ

Do I need an app to make coffee?

Check the particular model rather than treating connectivity as a requirement across Nespresso. Some Vertuo machines offer connected features, including software updates and maintenance guidance. The manual should establish what is needed for initial setup and ordinary brewing. Buy for the controls and routine you want, not simply for the presence of Wi-Fi.

Should I expect every Nespresso machine to include a milk frother?

No, milk equipment depends on the model and package. Some machines brew coffee only, some are bundled with a separate frother, and others have integrated milk equipment. Check exactly what is included, then read its cleaning instructions. A photograph showing a milk drink does not establish that the machine prepares the milk itself.

Can I buy replacement tanks and capsule containers?

Nespresso says replacement removable parts are available for many machines, but some older discontinued models are exceptions. Identify the exact model before ordering, because similar-looking parts need not be interchangeable. When buying used equipment, check that essential removable parts are present and confirm current replacements rather than assuming they will remain available.

Where to go next

Read Coffee Machine Brands to compare the wider equipment categories, then Philips and Krups Coffee Machines for the distinction between a manufacturer’s own machines and its capsule-system partnerships. Dualit Coffee Machines is a useful next read for capsule-focused comparisons, while La Marzocco Coffee Machines takes you towards a different, more hands-on brewing approach.
